More Area Attractions & Services

  • 2.1 mile(s) from SC Botanical Garden, From a humble beginning as a camellia collection in the 1950s, the South Carolina Botanical Garden has blossomed into a 295-acre sanctuary for diversity by engaging people in the living world. The Garden serves as an interdisciplinary resource, focusing on teaching, research and outreach to advance awareness and understanding of plants, animals, minerals and South Carolina's culture. Furthermore, the SCBG is a refuge for life. It exists for enjoyment and education and is available and accessible to all people. The grounds of the South Carolina Botanical Garden are open and free of charge every day from sunrise to sunset.
  • 1.6 mile(s) from Fort Hill, Fort Hill was the home of John C. Calhoun, South Carolina’s pre-eminent 19th century statesman, from 1825 until his death in 1850. The antebellum plantation home, office and kitchen are furnished mostly with family artifacts. It was through a succession of Calhoun-Clemson women that Fort Hill came into Thomas Green Clemson’s possession. In 1888, Clemson bequeathed the Fort Hill plantation and cash to the state of South Carolina for the establishment of a scientific and agricultural college. He willed that Fort Hill shall always be open for the inspection of visitors. Today, Fort Hill is just as Thomas Clemson envisioned — preserved, restored and open to the public for tours.
  • 1.6 mile(s) from Hanover House, Hanover House was built in 1716 for French Huguenot Paul de St. Julien in Berkeley County, S.C. St. Julien honored his French heritage in the mortar of one chimney where he inscribed, Peu a Peu, from the French proverb, Little by little the bird builds its nest. In the 1940s, Hanover was moved 250 miles north to the campus of Clemson University, home to the state’s architecture school. It was relocated to the South Carolina Botanical Garden in 1994 and now overlooks an heirloom vegetable garden. Hanover House serves as a monument of an early French Huguenot colonial structure as is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Spartanburg Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America aided in furnishing the Hanover museum with 18th and 19th century artifacts.
  • 2.3 mile(s) from Old Stone Church, Built in 1802, the Old Stone Church stands as a remarkable testament to the history of Upstate South Carolina. From the simple elegance of the church’s sanctuary to the beautiful stacked-stone exterior, the church is cherished by the local community and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Buried within the church’s cemetery grounds are patriots, pioneers of industry and education, and soldiers, including such notable figures as Andrew Pickens and Robert Anderson. The Old Stone Church Commission is committed to preserving this rich history for generations to come. Today, the church plays an active role in the greater Upstate community, hosting weddings, funerals, church services and other gatherings.
  • 23 mile(s) from Glassy Mountain, The SC Department of Natural Resources acquired the Glassy Mountain Heritage Preserve on May 8, 1990. The preserve covers 65 acres and is located near Pickens, South Carolina. One of only a few Piedmont Monadnocks in South Carolina, this unusual land form provides a spectacular view and harbors several rare plant species. Glassy Mountain is a relatively undisturbed Piedmont Monadnock (an isolated mountain in the Piedmont). This type of landform is rare in South Carolina. Glassy Mountain's north face has extensive bare rock areas with steep inclines that drop nearly 400 feet in places. Granitic dome plant communities with associated plants (Yucca, Crotonopsis, and Talinum) occur there. A regionally threatened plant, thousand-leaf groundsel (Packera millefolium), also grows on the dome. The rare landform, plant community and plant types make Glassy Mountain a worthwhile addition to the state's Heritage Preserve system.
  • 21.3 mile(s) from Hagood Mill, This restored 1845 gristmill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hagood Mill is one of the oldest known mills still producing grain products in South Carolina today. At 20 feet tall by 4 feet wide, the mill has the largest waterwheel left in the state, and it's the only surviving one in SC made of wood. The site includes a reproduced Cherokee home site, blacksmith shop, 1791 Murphree cabin, 1830s Hagood cabin and more. The mill is open during daylight hours to picnic and hike and the third Saturday every month for folklife festivals with demonstrations, living history and musical entertainment. Group tours are offered by appointment.
  • 28 mile(s) from Twin Falls, This easy trail follows Reedy Cove Creek, with almost no climbing or descending. There are several small side trails leading down to the creek where to view some nice cascades, and get your feet wet on a hot summer day. The trail ends at an overlook shelter featuring an excellent view of the Falls. These Falls are not identical twins as the one on the left drops straight down from its 75-ft perch, while the one on the right slides down the rocks at about a 45-degree slope. It could actually be called triple falls, because there is a third smaller waterfall that can be seen through the trees to the far right.
