Charleston Museum

Founded in 1773, The Charleston Museum is as much a piece of history as the artifacts contained within it. America’s first museum is located in the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina and features exhibits including the Joseph Manigault House and the Heyward-Washington House. The museum in Charleston contains something for everyone with attractions such as an armory, civil war artifacts, Kidstory and the Loeblien gallery of silver to name a few.

Children and parents alike can enjoy the museum, which offers educational programs, tours, field trips and summer camps. America’s most historic city has plenty to offer by way of this incredible museum, a must see on the South Carolina Coast.

Drayton Hall

History buffs in the coastal region of South Carolina have a treasure waiting for them in Charleston. Drayton Hall, built between 1738 and 1742, is a beautiful Georgia-Palladian plantation house, located across the Ashley River in North Charleston.

This National Historic Landmark survived the Civil War, as well as the Revolutionary War, becoming the only plantation home along the Ashley River to do so. This exquisite home sits on 630 acres of land, that was once a rice plantation.

This beautiful historical plantation stayed in the Drayton family for seven generations, beginning with John Drayton. He built the home adjacent to his birthplace, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, one of the oldest remaining plantations in America's southern region. Seven generations of the Bowens Family also lived and worked at the Drayton Hall.

By 1974, Charles and Frank Drayton sold the home to the National Trust. Enjoy a guided tour this incredible plantation home, as well as walk along the River Walk and the Marsh Walk to see the remains of the 18-century rice fields. Fort Sumter National Monument

Fort Sumter National Monument is the site of the civil war between North and South Carolina on April 12, 1861. Located in the Charleston harbor, the monument is home to one of the best collections of 19th century seacoast artillery found in America. Upon arriving on the island, listen to a brief recorded National Park Service ranger history talk before continuing your self-guided tour of the fort.

After ferrying back to the mainland, visit the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center in Charleston for further education on the fort and the events leading up to the battle. The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests encompass more than 629,000 acres of land in South Carolina. Gibbes Museum of Art

First opened in 1905, the Gibbes Museum of Art was originally endowed by art lover James Shoolbred Gibbes Sr. Through the original endowment of $100,000 left in his will, the museum has grown and flourished into a collection of more than 10,000 works of art. Featured works primarily originate from Charleston and surrounding areas throughout the state, each telling their own story with its place in the rich history of the city.
