A Getaway in this National Natural Landmark
South Carolina’s Congaree National Park
There’s no end to the possibilities this vacation in the Congaree National Park – a playground of 22,000 acres nearly three quarters of which is wilderness area. A point of pride in South Carolina, this park hosts the largest area of old-growth, bottomland hardwood forest in the country. Choose from hiking, fishing, and canoeing on the Congaree River, as well as tours, festivities and an educational center.
If you’ve got all day, try a hike down the seven-mile Oakridge Trail for a good look at the old-growth woodlands of the park, or trek the 11-mile King Snake Trail where you’ll more than likely catch a glimpse of a few critters. Fishing is highly encouraged in the Congaree National Park, and anglers usually reel in some catfish, panfish and largemouth bass throughout your vacation.
The park is also known for its incredible canoe trails, taking visitors down Cedar Creek and the Congaree River – known as the Congaree River Blue Trail. Park rangers offer free guided tour of the canoe trails on the weekends, so be sure to rent a canoe in nearby Columbia or bring your own boat.
Need a little break from the sun? Step into the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. Check out the exhibits of the park daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and be sure to pick up a gift for the home.
