A Vacation on South Carolina’s Coast
Alligators and Atalaya Castle: Huntington Beach
A vacation on the beach? Well that’s an obvious pair. Between the fishing, boating, and picnicking, you won’t want to leave your time at the Huntington Beach State Park. Just 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, you can spend your entire getaway on the beaches of coastal South Carolina.
Strap on some comfortable shoes for a little journey down the two-mile Sandpiper Pond Trail. This coastal tour of the park is perfect for bird watching, wildlife viewing and nature photography. If you don’t have all day, try the quarter-mile Kerrigan Trail leading its travelers to a quaint boardwalk serving as yet another haven for bird watching and wildlife viewing.
Sign up for the Coastal Exploration Program – spanning from March through November – for a tour of the Huntington Beach State Park’s marshlands and nature trails. See if you can spot an alligator, or name some of the birds you see flying overhead.
Trying to beat the heat this vacation season? Take a tour of the historic Atalaya Castle, the winter homestead of Archer M. Huntington himself, or step inside the park’s Nature Center. Stick a hand in the touch tank full of baby alligators, or let people know where you’ve been with a souvenir from the gift shop.
