South Carolina’s National Forests
An Ideal Adventure on 250,000 Acres
Just 20 miles north of Charleston and 100 miles southeast of Columbia, the Francis Marion National Forest is the place to be. Stretching over hundreds of miles of the South Carolina coast, this National Forrest along with the Sumter National Forest is 250,000 acres of Carolina country.
You may explore the rugged inland mountains of the Francis Marion National Forest, all the way down to the breezy coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Discover a number of ranger districts in the forest, including the Enoree Ranger District, and the mysteriously titled Francis Marion Ranger District.
Mountain biker? Check out the Forks Area Trail System of the Long Cane Ranger District. Need to get on the water during your getaway? Coast down the nine-mile canoe trail in the Francis Marion Ranger District.
Other activities on the Francis Marion menu include hiking, fishing, and hunting – as well as laid-back luxuries such as picnics, bird watching and nature photography. Cast out for bass and crappie in a countless amount of lakes, or survey outdoor South Carolina along endless miles of trail.
Need some beach time on your vacation? Closer to the South Carolina coast is the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge – a 65,000-acre section of the forest complete with beaches and marshlands.
Packing it in for the day? Head to Charleston. Need a place closer? Mount Pleasant yields excellent accommodations. Heading back inland? Try North Charleston. Your options for a comfortable night’s stay are just as limitless as your adventures in the Francis Marion National Forest.
