History, Art & Plenty of NCAA Sports in Capital City
Make travel plans for South Carolina and head for Columbia. The capital of South Carolina and affectionately known as the "Capital of Southern Hospitality," Columbia is an ideal destination in central SC. With a rich history – be sure to visit the Woodrow Wilson Family Home – eclectic local attractions, and plenty of parks and natural areas for outdoor recreation, you'll find just the right kind of adventure on your next visit.
One of the your first visits should be to the Columbia Museum of Art. Originally known as the Taylor House, a residence, the Columbia Museum of Art featured only 10 paintings in its original collection in 1950, but began to grow its collection in 1954. The Columbia Museum of Art continued to grow it's collection, and by 1998 moved into a new 22,000 square feet home – its current location. Visitors to the Columbia Museum of Art have been known to travel in from cities like Florence and Santee.
Make sure you set aside some time to check out Finlay Park in downtown Columbia. At 18 acres, Finlay Park is named for former mayor Kirkman Finlay and features the popular and unique Finlay Park Fountain. A dizzying and spiraling downpour of water makes the Finlay Park Fountain seemingly one of a kind.
Be sure to experience a bit of local and state history with a visit to the South Carolina State Museum. Opened in 1988, the South Carolina State Museum is houses within what used to be the Columbia Mills Building, a structure built in 1893 and opened in 1894. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is referred to as the musuem's largest artifact.
As you explore the South Carolina State Museum, head for the Lipscomb Art Gallery – 7,800 square feet of work from local artists to nationally and world renowned artists. The Lipscomb Art Gallery features a bi-annual rotation of it's art on display, utilizing new art work each time.
The annual events you'll want to check out in Columbia include the World Beer Festival held in January, and don't forget your chili cook-off boots for the Palladium Society's Chili Cook-Off. You'll find the Palladium Society's Annual Chili Cook-Off at the Ellison Building within the SC State Fairgrounds in late February. In the summer, check out the South Carolina Book Festival or the Lexington Wine Walk.
Any visit to Columbia should always include college sports action – check out the South Carolina Gamecocks on your next trip. A top program in college football, the Gamecocks play home games at Williams-Brice Stadium during late summer and into autumn. The Gamecocks basketball teams play at Carolina Stadium, while the Gamecocks soccer clubs play at Stone Stadium, and the softball team calls Beckham Field home.
